In an attempt to encourage students for environmental protection, economic gains and promote their interest for tree-planting, the 233 Brigade Headquarters in Vakarei under the 23 Division of the Security Force Headquarters – East ( SFHQ-E) on Thursday (8) distributed more than 2000 camp-grown cashew plants among 475 students and 25 teachers at Batticaloa-Mankerny R.C.T.M School, Vakarai under a programme, called ‘Green Lanka’.
The saplings were from the 233 Brigade-managed nursery at Vakarei after Dilmah group which launched a project for cultivation of cashew plants some months back donated a stock of 50,000 cashew plants to the 233 Brigade to run a cashew plant nursery.
233 Brigade Commander Colonel Anil Samarasinghe with the blessings of the Commander, SF-East took the initiative in this regard and arranged the donation of those plants among students and teachers.
Those 475 students and 25 teachers were selected, considering availability of own land with them, following a survey done by the staffers in the said school.
During the distribution ceremony, teachers, students and a representative gathering of Army personnel were present.
